IB Math AA vs AI: Which Should Your Child Take?
A clear comparison of IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches versus Applications and Interpretation, including the university implications parents often miss.
IB students face an early and consequential decision: Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) or Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (AI), and then whether to take it at Standard Level or Higher Level. The choice shapes both the daily workload and the university doors that stay open.
What the two courses actually are
AA is the more traditional, algebraic course. It emphasises pure mathematics, proof and calculus, and part of the assessment is sat without a calculator. AI is more applied and data-driven. It leans on statistics, modelling and real-world context, and technology is permitted throughout.
Who AA suits
- Students who enjoy algebra, proof and abstract reasoning
- Anyone targeting engineering, physics, mathematics or computer science
- Students who already handle A-Math style manipulation comfortably
Who AI suits
- Students who think in data, context and application rather than abstraction
- Those heading towards business, design, social sciences, medicine or economics-adjacent courses
- Students who engage far more when the maths is visibly connected to the real world
The university question parents miss
This is where families should look carefully. Many competitive courses, especially engineering, physics, mathematics and computer science, expect AA HL or at minimum AA SL. AI HL is accepted by a growing number of programmes but is still less universally recognised for maths-heavy degrees. Check the specific entry requirements of your child's target universities before committing.
Pick the course that matches how your child thinks and where they want to end up. Prestige alone is a poor reason to take AA HL.
Common mistakes
- 1Choosing HL for prestige when the workload will drag down other subjects
- 2Assuming AI is the easy option, when it is simply different rather than easier
- 3Deciding before checking university entry requirements
- 4Underestimating the Internal Assessment, which carries a meaningful share of the final grade
Our take
If your child enjoys abstraction and is aiming at a STEM degree, AA is usually the right call. If they think in data and application, AI often produces both a stronger grade and genuine engagement. Either way, the underlying algebra foundations matter more than the label on the course.
We teach both AA and AI alongside the secondary syllabus at every centre — IB Math is not a JC-level class. Book a $50 trial class and we will give you an honest assessment of which route fits your child.
