What actually changes in Secondary 1

How to bridge the gap
The fix is almost always algebra fluency. A student needs to manipulate expressions confidently before they can think about the actual problem. That means deliberate practice on expanding, factorising, solving and substituting until it is automatic, not just until it is correct.
Most Secondary 1 struggles are not a Secondary 1 problem. They are an algebra fluency problem wearing a new uniform.

- Treat the first term as a transition, not a verdict on ability
- Ask to see working, not just answers, since that is where marks are lost
- Address gaps in Secondary 1 rather than hoping they resolve by Secondary 2
- Keep the tone calm, because confidence collapses faster than competence
