A Realistic School Holiday Math Revision Plan
How to use the school holidays for Math without burning your child out, including how long to study by level and what to prioritise.
School holidays are the single best opportunity to close a Math gap, and the most commonly wasted one. The two failure modes are doing nothing at all, and scheduling an unsustainable programme that collapses in week one. Here is a middle path that actually works.
Start by diagnosing, not revising
Spend the first session finding out what is actually weak. Have your child attempt a mixed paper from the previous term and mark it strictly. The topics they lose marks on become the plan. Without this step, most students simply revise whatever they happen to remember, which is usually what they already know.
How much time is realistic
- Lower primary: 20 to 30 minutes a day, at most 4 days a week
- Upper primary: 45 minutes a day, 4 to 5 days a week
- Lower secondary: 45 to 60 minutes, 4 to 5 days a week
- Upper secondary and JC: 60 to 90 minutes, 5 days a week, ideally in focused blocks
These numbers are lower than most holiday schedules and higher in effectiveness, because they are short enough to be sustained for the whole break.
A three-week structure
- 1Week 1: rebuild the weak topics identified in the diagnostic, working slowly and untimed for understanding
- 2Week 2: mixed practice across those topics, so the student must identify the method rather than being told it
- 3Week 3: timed papers under exam conditions, followed by careful review of every error
Revision that never becomes timed practice leaves a student prepared for homework, not for an exam.
Protect the rest
Deliberately schedule days with no Math at all. Consolidation happens during rest, and a child who returns to school already exhausted will lose more in term one than they gained over the break. A holiday plan that ignores this is not ambitious, it is counterproductive.
The most common mistakes
- Buying several assessment books and finishing none of them
- Revising in topic order rather than in order of weakness
- Doing only untimed practice, then being surprised by exam pace
- Treating completion as the goal, rather than the number of previously wrong questions now consistently correct
