Signs Your Child Needs Math Tuition (And When They Don't)

We run tuition centres, so treat this with appropriate suspicion. But we turn families away often enough that it is worth writing down honestly: some children clearly benefit from tuition, and some are better served by a conversation with their teacher and a change of study habits.

Signs that genuinely warrant extra help

1. 1The gap is in foundations, not the current topic. If Secondary 3 work is failing because algebra never became fluent, classroom pace will not fix it
2. 2Results are sliding steadily over two or more assessments, rather than one bad paper
3. 3Your child understands in class but cannot start a question alone at home, which points to recognition without retrieval
4. 4They have stopped attempting difficult questions altogether, which usually signals lost confidence rather than lost ability
5. 5The teacher has flagged a specific, persistent weakness that homework alone is not closing

Signs that probably do not

• One disappointing result in an otherwise steady record
• A grade that is fine but not as high as a sibling's or a friend's
• A topic they have only just been introduced to and have not had time to practise
• Your own anxiety about an exam that is still a long way off

Tuition fixes gaps and habits. It does not fix a child who is simply a few weeks into a hard topic, and starting too early can teach them that they cannot cope alone.

Things worth trying first

Before adding another commitment to the week, try these. They cost nothing and occasionally solve the problem outright:

• Ask the subject teacher directly what the specific weakness is. Teachers usually know, and are rarely asked
• Look at the actual paper with your child, not just the mark, and sort the losses into careless, method, and genuinely did not know
• Check whether they can redo a wrong question a week later, unaided
• Fix sleep and screen habits before adding study hours, since attention is usually the constraint

If you do decide on tuition

Look for a setting where someone can actually see your child's working every week. The value is not extra hours of exposure, it is somebody diagnosing precisely where the reasoning breaks down and correcting it before it hardens into a habit. In a very large class, that does not happen, and you are paying for supervised homework.
